    Vice President

The Honorable Yosiwo Palikkun George is the 8th Vice President of the Federated States of Micronesia.

George was born in Kosrae on July 24, 1941. He attended Malem Elementary School and moved to Pohnpei in 1957 where he attended Pohnpei Intermediate School then on to Pacific Island Central School (PICS) where he graduated in 1963. The same year, he attended the College of Guam (now the University of Guam) as a recipient of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (TTPI) General Scholarship and continued his undergraduate studies at the University of Hawaii at Manoa where he was awarded an East-West Center Scholarship and spent a semester at the University of New Mexico. In 1969, he graduated with a B.S. in Mathematics. George also spent a year of graduate school at Ball State University in Indiana while working for the TTPI Social Security Program in Saipan.

George launched his political career during the formative stages of the Federated States of Micronesia. It was during this transitional period that Kosrae elected him as its first Lieutenant Governor. George succeeded to leadership rapidly and was appointed by President Tosiwo Nakayama as the first Secretary of the newly created Department of Social Services (presently the Department of Health & Social Affairs).

In 1983, George won the seat as Governor in Kosrae and served two consecutive terms. After serving the people of Kosrae for two full terms, President Bailey Olter appointed him to the post as the FSM Ambassador to the United Nations. It was during this appointment that George was elected to the 10th FSM Congress where he served for four years. Later, the Honorable Rensley Sigrah, Governor of Kosrae State, appointed him as the Chief Justice for Kosrae State Court where he served until his retirement in 2006. Following retirement, he served the FSM Health Insurance Program as the administrator.

In addition to his political portfolio, having served as different head positions throughout his time in governance, George demonstrated exceptional skills during his tenure as the FSM Ambassador to the United States. He held the post from 2008-2011 until he ran for the State of Kosrae’s at-large seat for the FSM Congress and won.

Vice President George was elected as the 8th Vice President of the Federated States of Micronesia and was sworn into office on May 11, 2015. He is married to Antilise W. Mackwelung and they have seven children and several grandchildren.
