President Panuelo Meets Mayor Leopold, Promises Efficient Implementation of Projects

PALIKIR, Pohnpei—On June 6th, 2019, His Excellency David W. Panuelo, President of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) received the Honorable Senard Leopold, Mayor of Nukuoro Municipality of Pohnpei State, and his associate Johnny Rudolph in a courtesy call. The primary purpose of the visit was to inform President Panuelo on the implementation of public projects.

“This is the main reason for visiting your office, Mr. President,” said Mr. Rudolph. “We’ve had some struggles getting [the public house and water] projects moving forward, although the funding is there.” The projects, already appropriated by the Congress of the FSM, are implemented through the Executive Branch of the FSM National Government.

“I will push on it,” said President Panuelo, “Because now [the Department of Transportation, Communication & Infrastructure (DTC&I]] is under my direction…I appreciate that the delay of implementation in public projects affects peoples’ livelihoods. I know what it is like to be frustrated for too long, and so I can assure you, Mayor and [Mr. Rudolph], that if you have a list of projects you’re already working on with DTC&I, send it to [the Office of the President]. There’s no reason why [Project Control Documents] should be delayed."

Additionally, President Panuelo and Mayor Leopold discussed the scheduling of the MV Caroline Voyager and the MV Micronesian Navigator’s field trips to Nukuoro and other remote islands. President Panuelo advised that he’s determined to improve the efficiency and utility of the ships’ service to remote islands.

“I have one last thing to ask,” said Mayor Leopold. “Do you plan to visit the outer islands this year?”

“I want to,” said President Panuelo, who advised that he intends to develop the schedule to visit the remote islands of Pohnpei State, Yap State, and Chuuk State sometime after the National Joint Inauguration Ceremony on July 29th, 2019. President Panuelo also advised that he hoped to give each community approximately one month’s advance notice of such a visit, or at least as much notice as possible, so as to avoid disrupting any community events.

The FSM National Government is committed to the values on its seal of peace, unity, and liberty, and in addressing the needs and concerns of its citizens through the swift, thorough, and quality execution of Government services and Government projects.
